A vessel is one of ceramics’ oldest forms; the horse one of its recurring subjects. Sue Fraser brings the two together, building local clay, image, colour and repeated firings into a surface that holds evidence of different places, processes and histories.

Sue Fraser’s work has this really interesting relationship with history. Horses and women come up again and again, and there’s a lot of influence from the time she’s spent studying and working in China, Japan and Southeast Asia, particularly the Tang dynasty horses. Bring all that influence and knowledge back here. She works with porcelain and Ming washes, but she also digs clay from her own land, gathers ash and wood-fires work in her Bourry Box kiln bringing another little piece of history into the surface. So, there are all these different times and places meeting in the work - centuries of ceramic tradition, the Northern Rivers landscape, Sue Fraser herself, and whatever happens in the fire.
