Description:
“Black Fig” was inspired by a recent visit to Minyan Falls. Minyan Falls is a stunning 100-metre plunge waterfall in the Nightcap National Park, located about 45 minutes from Byron Bay. Surrounded by subtropical rainforest, it is a key site within the Gondwana Rainforest World Heritage area and was part of the “Big Scrub”. The “Big Scrub” was once the largest lowland subtropical rainforest in Australia. It covered 75,000 ha in the hinterland of Byron Bay, until cleared by European settlers. Today, only 1% of this once mighty rainforest remains.
My painting has evolved through my photo images of the falls then, back in my studio, I have used my imagination and have added Bangalow Palms and a Black Fig (ficus macrophylla) in an effort to capture the way it used to look many years ago.
