Part of O’Brien’s ongoing work, Ballast draws on the weight carried low within a boat to give it stability and strength.

The work considers what anchors us in the aftermath of upheaval - weight that which can hold us steady. A chain extending from the right side of the vessel reinforces this sense of anchoring, strength and endurance. The figure is evocative of the figurehead of a ship.
